MERIT CASE STUDY

Mississippi GEER Grant

Incentivizing students to meet goals for a bright future

Challenge

The Jackson County Chamber, United Way, and Economic Development Foundation partnered with Merit on the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) grant to improve the quality of Jackson County high school graduates' readiness for the next step on their path to a career.

Merit’s solution

Career coaches at seven high schools across four districts in Jackson County are using Merit to issue digital credentials for students’ achievements, volunteer hours, and CTE certifications while also providing a platform for showcasing career exploration videos to guide students towards some of Jackson County’s most in-demand occupations.

Without Merit

Agencies and organizations often rely on legacy communication methods, such as random newsletters or generalized signage at events, that fail to connect with qualified candidates. The lack of a convenient and secure way for students and workers to carry and rapidly verify credentials leads to lost opportunities.

Possible Funding Sources

  • Federal and/or state grant(s)
  • Legislation such as WIOWA or the American Rescue Plan
  • Direct contracts

OVERVIEW

Merit is partnering with Mississippi’s GEER Grant recipients, including the Jackson County United Way, Jackson County School District, Jackson County Chamber, and Jackson County Economic Development Foundation. Merit’s digital app enables students to track progress towards their goals for the future. Students earn “merits” for academic achievement, life-skills training, and community service. The user-friendly app helps them see their real-time steps towards continuing their education, enlisting in the armed forces, or entering an in-demand skilled career. Merit’s app will be used to issue digital credentials, empower students with verified resumes, connect students with job exploration videos, and match students with career coaches.
