MERIT CASE STUDY

University of Utah Health

Bringing valuable training opportunities to students & emergency response volunteers

Challenge

University of Utah Health wished to connect emergency response volunteers with online CERT training opportunities and provide them with an agile digital certification record.

Merit’s solution

Merit technology enables the University to match emergency response volunteers with online courses and events. As students acquire certifications, the University uses Merit to make them aware of expanded opportunities for which they qualify.

Without Merit

Disaster responses often use paper-based systems, a mix of technology, and manual processes. Patchwork approaches are ineffective because capturing all emergency personnel hours worked during crises is difficult.

Possible Funding Sources

  • FEMA reimbursement
  • Federal and/or state grant(s)
  • Direct contract

OVERVIEW

Merit has partnered with the Online Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) Academy to notify emergency response volunteers about online education and certification options. Upon course completion, "merits," digitized credentials, are issued to students who are then matched, through Merit's technology, with relevant, expanded opportunities for additional certifications, continuing education offerings, or invitations to future events.

QUOTES

"We are very excited to partner with Merit, not only for Online CERT, but because with the Opportunities program we will be able to further expand students' awareness of other related courses," said Rachel Brown, Program Director of Hazardous Waste Worker & Emergency Preparedness at the University of Utah.
