The Role

We are looking for an entrepreneurial marketing contributor to help us execute the cross-functional strategy and drive adoption of the Merit platform across targeted industries, and help us build awareness, understanding, and engagement of the Merit brand for both corporate and go-to-market (GTM) short-term and long-term goals. In our world, “content is king,” and we need someone to take the reigns of our content strategy and drive actionable content and results as a strategic part of our marketing mix. This person will build the playbook and craft the Merit brand tone and voice as we service current industries, enter new markets, and help us establish ourselves as thought leaders in appropriate local, regional, and national business, technology, and trade publications, events, awards, and other appropriate channels. This position will report to the vice president of marketing. 
 
Merit is a startup environment where you will be expected to roll up your sleeves, take initiative, and get creative about finding solutions to challenges. This is a full-time position based in Millbrae, CA (Merit Headquarters). Working remotely is also an option once on-boarded.


Responsibilities

  • Work with product GTM, executive and  marketing teams to thoroughly understand the inner-workings of our target industries and industry strategies
  • Source, onboard, and maintain internal and external marketing and communications relationships across target industries
  • Once on-boarded, act as the primary point of contact and build long-term relationships with press, analysts, and influencers across target industries on a local, state, and national level
  • Monitor and analyze customer’s usage of our product to ferret out metrics, hero stories, anecdotes, fun facts, and more to leverage in marketing and communications efforts
  • Maintain consistent internal communication, across meetings and tools (Hubspot, Asana, Slack), to keep the team updated and aligned on progress towards goals

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of marketing, communications, or content creation experience 
  • Strong writer and editor from concept to completion
  • Ability to work from verbal ideas and build out appropriate content for marketing, sales, corporate, and public relations initiatives
  • Ability to work with public affairs and/or public relations agency to drive strategic initiatives, project manage, and create purpose-built content in a wide variety of form factors to suit paid, owned, and earned media for business and trade press, speaking opportunities, award submissions, presentations, blogs, webinars, social media posts, and byline articles.
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills, as demonstrated through previous experience
  • Ability to prepare content and present to both formal and informal audiences
  • Ability to prioritize among competing tasks
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated self-starter
  • A passion for Merit's mission 
  • Ability and willingness to write content for diverse industries and channels in different tone and voice as needed
  • Experience in cause-related marketing, public service, or community organizing preferred but not required
  • BS in marketing, business, communications or a related field
  • Writing samples in multiple forms will be reviewed – press releases, bylines, sales collateral, advertising copy.
