Digital vs. Paper Licenses: Why Digital Wins Every Time

By Amanda Davis on July 30, 2020

Everyone has experienced the moment of going through a cluttered file cabinet or an unorganized wallet looking for one important document that was tucked away. When we experience things like this, there is one thing we can all agree on: our licenses, membership cards, certifications, and records should not be a hassle to find or verify when needed. Even if you’re required to showcase your professional license in your place of work, how are you to show it when you’re on the road or practicing in a temporary place (like during Shelter-in-Place orders)? What if you need to validate a membership with a card and a form of ID but misplaced one of them? What about when the expiration date of your certification needs to be verified ASAP, but you don’t have your paperwork on-hand? These are just some of the limitations of having paper credentials and restricting occupational licensing laws.

How Architects Can Learn, Earn, and Experience More With Merit Opportunities

By Amanda Davis on July 27, 2020

In the field of architecture, it’s rare that professionals are able to find every resource they need and every available career opportunity all in one, easily-accessible place. Some opportunities, like an entry in this year’s Design Awards or new virtual continuing education (CE) courses may have gone unseen by architects because of a lack of exposure — especially for those not a part of organizations like the American Institute of Architects (AIA). These different opportunities are usually found in a variety of places, making it complicated to keep up with what’s available. ‘Opportunities’ is Merit’s latest app feature that addresses and mends this ongoing challenge for architects.

WorkNow Series | Part 4: The Unemployment Rate Has Skyrocketed

By Amanda Davis on July 21, 2020

Workforce departments have always faced issues, from minute to major, on a daily basis—even before the coronavirus pandemic struck. However, the declaration of national emergency in March has led to millions of lay-offs around the country, and a record-breaking unemployment rate that has left workforce departments and systems overwhelmed.

Occupational Licensing in a Post COVID-19 World

By Karin Vertefeuille on July 15, 2020

COVID-19 has shed light on many areas that are in need of improvement. The necessary expansion of occupational licensing to universal licensing reciprocity became evident in the struggles of healthcare workers who wanted to extend a hand where COVID-19 cases were high, and states scrambling to pass temporary laws that allow them to do so. Many began asking why these policies weren’t already prepared or in action, with the belief that this could have prevented hospitals and emergency responders from being overwhelmed in the early months of the virus. Occupational licensing simply allows licensees to practice where their credential was earned, which is not enough in national emergencies.

Camp Merit: How We Planned A Virtual Camp

By People Operations (POPs) on July 13, 2020

It’s a Merit tradition to host an annual camping trip for our employees. With COVID-19 cases still rising around the country, it seemed like having a typical camp experience wasn’t possible this year. However, we weren’t ready to give up without a fight! We understood that camp had to look a little different if it was to continue this year, so the People Operations (POPs) team got to work on planning what would be our first ever VIRTUAL CAMP! Instead of our usual full weekend trip (and an extra-long bus ride), it was condensed into a one-day event on a Monday so that our employees could enjoy a much needed day off.

With trends coming and going and techniques moving along with them, professionals need to be at the top of their game to keep up with client needs. Because of this, many are regularly looking for ways to learn more and stay stocked up with the latest products. Between searching for new training courses, beauty conventions, or school discounts and product offers, cosmetologists around the country have to put in major time and effort to find what they’re looking for. WorkNow Series | Part 3: System Maintenance & Accuracy

By Amanda Davis on July 2, 2020

Unsurprisingly, another obstacle comes as a result of the numerous old, complicated, and state-specific administering systems used around the country. System maintenance remains a difficult task as many local agencies build or buy their own tools and databases, requiring workforce departments to stay knowledgeable about and keep up with multiple systems. As for system accuracy, it is extremely difficult to update every single system of all minor and significant changes to any type of data, leading to inaccurate info when it’s needed.

WorkNow Series | Part 2: Important Data is Hard to Find and Even Harder to Take Action On

By Amanda Davis on June 16, 2020

Data powers workforce systems forward and provides workforce departments with actionable insight. Amongst this data is available labor and jobs, government-provided training, the numbers and stats of each of those, and so much more. But unfortunately, as a result of the (siloed) array of administering systems that differ state to state (and sometimes city to city) mentioned in Part 1, workforce data is often not available holistically.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of unemployed persons rose from 1.4 million to 7.1 million according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Another 5.2 million filed by mid-April. While millions of people continue to file every week, the workforce and unemployment departments are handling this drastic increase in system traffic. Many being overwhelmed by the demand as they deal with the immense number of administering systems and the different requirements that come along with each of them. That being the first of four points for improvement.

How Merit Embraced a DevOps Culture

By Jason Schwerberg on June 2, 2020

In the last decade, there hasn't been a bigger or more misunderstood buzzword in the development and operations worlds than "DevOps." Countless companies have roles for "DevOps Engineers" and rarely does it mean the same thing for any two of them. In many companies, a DevOps engineer is not much more than a Linux system administrator who works alongside a development. In others, a DevOps engineer is just the fancy new title given to system administrators whose job doesn't really change much at all. For others, DevOps engineers are software developers or system operators who learn how to write runbooks for Puppet or Chef, and that becomes their job description—but none of these are really DevOps.

Three Ways Merit Supports the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act

By Mike Murphy on March 9, 2020

The United States Congress passed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) in 2014 with wide bipartisan support, to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and support in order to succeed in the labor market. WOIA is responsible for reforming and injecting funding into many key programs that are critical to getting citizens ready for work.

Merit is complementary to these efforts, as our platform helps states unlock their workforce’s potential by providing a single, secure platform to issue, track, and verify credentials earned and trainings completed. As our team meets with labor and workforce partners and key stakeholders across the country, it is increasingly clear that Merit addresses many components of the WOIA.

Here are three specific ways in which Merit is complementary to the WIOA.

Merit’s Revenue Philosophy

By Tomer Kagan on February 13, 2020

A question we often get asked by potential partners, investors, the media, and candidates looking to join Merit is some variation of, “How does Merit make money?” Our vision is to build a network of truth and trust so everyone can shape their future, and that’s only achievable if everyone in the ecosystem gets value from Merit. Bill Gates once said, “A platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it exceeds the value of the company that creates it,” and we strongly agree with this platform mentality. Merit is in the business of value creation, not value extraction. Therefore we are very deliberate when it comes to our monetization strategy.

Effective Testing at Merit

By Frank Wilkerson on January 29, 2020

It's rare to meet a developer that enjoys writing and maintaining test code. Often testing is seen as an additional (tedious) step to completing a story, a hindrance to the team's velocity, or yet another time sink required by their company's "Definition of Done." In my experience, this is the case when teams try to chase a specific code coverage percentage. At Merit we don't chase code coverage and we want developers to enjoy writing tests, or at least to feel the tests they write are effective.

Bulk uploads with Merit: Issue thousands of merits in minutes!

By Merit on August 7, 2019

Do you issue certificates, licenses, or credentials? More importantly, do you send them in bulk?

If your answer is yes, then you know how difficult it is to send credentials one-by-one, even if you do it digitally. That’s why Merit created a tool for this very case – spreadsheet upload, our bulk upload tool. And hey, we’ve just made some powerful improvements to make the whole process even easier!

How does this feature work?

In a nutshell, the upload spreadsheet tool enables you to send dozens (or even thousands) of merits at once.

All you have to do is follow these basic steps:

  1. Create a merit template: This template represents the credential, license, or certificate that you need to send.
  2. Upload a merit template spreadsheet to Merit: This spreadsheet should include the recipient’s name, merit title, and other important fields for your credential.
  3. Send your merits: Once your spreadsheet is fully uploaded, click Send to share them with your recipients!

What improvements have been added?

Merit has just made some helpful updates to the upload spreadsheet tool to make your life easier!

  • The feature now offers a built-in guide that walks you through each step of the process.
  • You can now download a specific spreadsheet that corresponds with the merit template you want to send so there's no need to manually add fields to your spreadsheet.
  • You can also map your merit fields to any column in your spreadsheet, even if they don’t match or aren’t in the same order.
  • In cases where your spreadsheet has errors, you can download these errors to quickly identify and fix them.

Ready to get started?

To dive in, navigate to the Send Merits folder in the Organization Portal and choose the Upload Spreadsheet tab.

Need more help?

Visit our Help Center for step-by-step instructions on how to get started. You can also reach out to help@merits.com for more answers.

Spotting the Truth in a World of Lies

We expect white lies in our everyday lives and have become accustomed to not necessarily believing everything we hear. Whether it’s someone’s description on a dating app or a resume for work, we take what we hear with a grain of salt. Some people fiercely filter information for fabrications, exaggerations, plagiarism, white lies, and most of all: deception. But as one study suggests, we are on average only able to catch 54% of lies. Strikingly, in the same study, trained police officers, judges, and FBI agents weren’t that much better than the average person.
